I joined a group of blogging photographers last month! We are all members of Clickin' Moms, a large photography forum with support for hobbyists and professional photographers alike. It's been great for networking and growing in photography. I joined in 2014 when I became a mother of a newborn!
With our blog circle, we are doing a "4 on 4 project." Essentially, we share four images from the previous month on the fourth day of the current month. Click through to the next photographer, Chrissy Mazer, here!
The first one is of my daughter playing with her food. Toddlers are so full of emotion! At this very moment, she wants to sit in my lap and type, but ... no, not right now, haha. :)
I wanted to elaborate on the last image, the self-portrait of my daughter and I. She goes through phases of being extra affectionate or extra cranky. My friend jokingly calls it being "sweet and sour." So appropriate!! In this photograph, she raised up my shirt and poked my belly button, smiling as she tickled me. Then, she kissed my abdomen and hugged me. I didn't teach her that; she just does it on her own! *cue awwws*
As a photographer, I am usually behind the camera and I have thousands of photos of my daughter, yet I'm only in a few. Perhaps a lot of it is being self-conscious about my post-baby body (you know, with stretch marks, weight gain, and looking perpetually tired). Yet, I want any readers out there - mothers, photographers, clients, etc. - to know that I find you beautiful. For me, true beauty isn't found in the airbrushed, photoshopped appearances you see on television or on magazines. True beauty is your inner self (as cliche as that sounds); there is so much beauty within a human soul and a person's life. We shouldn't limit our idea of beauty to mere external appearances, but celebrate the joy in our everyday.
This year, I want to be more intentional about getting in the frame, so you'll see more self-portraits here on my website or social media. For more excellent examples of self-portraits of mothers with their children, check out this group project on Clickin' Moms, "Because You Were There Too."
