I almost started the monthly summary again with the words: This month has been busy! Well, in reality, I just feel busy and tired. My work schedule switched to early morning shifts for a few weeks, so I wake up at 4 a.m. even on my off days so my body and mind aren’t adjusting to drastic time differences. I prefer staying up late opposed to waking up very early. And to think, when I was in college, I woke up super early all the time!)

The desire to improve my life feels never-ending – eat healthier, exercise more, photograph meaningfully, manage and market my business better, parent more attentively, master new nursing skills, mindfully spend time with the Lord. The List goes on. Sometimes, in the moment, I have a strong sense of dissatisfaction, that I’m not where I want to be . . . but really, it’s where I need to be – right now – for my family. I can’t be expert status at ALL those things right now. So I have to cut down and prioritize what IS important. Am I spending my time and energy well? That can definitely be improved. Keep it simple, Michelle!!

Looking back on this past month from August, I can see that it wasn’t for nothing. To be honest, I’m so tired from work and eagerly focused on the upcoming fall and holiday season for photography, that August feels like one big blur! But then again, that’s yet another reason why I’m thankful for photography and that I intentionally took my “big camera” out on expeditions in the rain, to Killeen’s local ComiCon, and captured our everyday adventures. Time sure does fly!

Just a little reminder: “Be patient with yourself.”

Some background on these photos:

#1 – Playing in Puddles – Finally, we have some rain and splashing fun! This is a childhood bucket list activity that I have wanted to do for some time now, inspired by Diana Gabaldon’s prologue in Voyager. Love these bright, cheerful colors!

#2 – Not a Morning Person – This one is just funny. When she wakes up in the morning, her hair is all askew and she does NOT like it when I open up the window to bring in some natural light! Bahahaha. I’m sorry, my sweet child… but mama needs the extra light for decent camera exposure.

#3 – Rembrandt Portrait – I actually had a different project in mind. I love her perky, Dr. Seuss hair and wanted to do a side-by-side portrait with a pineapple. Hmm, need to do a collaboration with my assistant. A.k.a. daddy.

#4 – Interpretive Dance – Part of our bedtime routine, I guess. I often catch our toddler babbling to herself and playing in the mirror when it’s time to brush her teeth. Find fun where you can! #lifelessonsfromatoddler

It's August here in Texas! The heat is in full force, but I hope that means slightly cooler autumn weather is around the corner! ;)

Here are some highlights from the past month:

  • We returned from a beach vacation and our first vacation without our toddler. She stayed with her grandparents; it is a total blessing to be near family when your husband is active duty in the Army!
  • I started a new job working at a hospital in Temple, Texas.  Through work, I’ve already met some wonderful people. Many nurses I work with continually say they LOVE working at the hospital and on this unit. The supportive morale was welcoming and I hope I can contribute.
  • I exceeded one of my personal goals to take 3-4 photography workshops this year. I’m at 5 already! The most recent course I took was Xanthe Berkley's Time Capsule Video course. You can see my Fourth of July Vacation video here.

First Photo: I was determined to get some summer-themed photos. Our family dog got bath in the backyard and we splashed around outside. We went to the water park in Lion’s Den Park in Killeen too. Our daughter loves playout outside and in water, but we definitely have to go after nap time.

Second Photo: Bahaha, this is delightful revenge for the first year of sleepless nights. At least when she wakes up and seems surprised, she appears innocent and sweet.

Third Photo: Maybe I have biased “mom eyes” for this one. It’s just a simple close up with a genuine smile and bright eyes with catchlights. Usually my daughter will only smile if my husband does something funny, but not usually at the camera. (Any other moms/photographers relate??)

Fourth Photo: I know this one is random, but I couldn’t decide between this and others… But this one makes me so happy! I handed the camera to my husband to capture this cute moment. Sometimes our toddler likes to pat us on the bum. She uses the same gentle motions like when she pets our dog. I don’t get the toddler logic, but it’s sweet and endearing.

This month has been a whirlwind! It began with a Mother’s Day holiday and ended with a trip to Dallas-Fort Worth for a wedding over Memorial Day weekend. I took my third online photography class this year called Mastering Natural Light Indoors. You can see different techniques implemented in the images below, like the use of soft light, split lighting, and utilizing shadows to tell a story. Before MNLI, I thought “good light” could only be bright and airy, but the class taught me to appreciate shadows as well. More than ever, I realize that photography is more than a digital snapshot, but it invokes the deliberate use of light and shadow to convey a message. Later this month, I will take a class called “Fine Art and Visual Expression.” I cannot wait to start!

I've added another self-portrait from May. I don’t think this image is particularly intriguing, but I think other mothers can appreciate the candid moment. ;)

Here is what I shared on that day:

136 | 366 - "The Days are Long"

Sometimes (read: a lot of the time) it seems like our days are on repeat: wake up, exercise, attend to crying child, wipe snot, feed child, clean up food thrown on floor, get dressed, dress daughter before she undresses herself, perform miscellaneous errands, return home before nap time, put child in bed only to have her crawl out and sleep on the floor, and clean around the house while toddler undoes the things you just did.

But time passes quickly, in an instant. 6 years ago I graduated from college. 10 years ago (*grumbles* a decade?!) I graduated from high school. ... Even now, I can't believe the year is almost half over!

My daughter is on a waitlist for daycare and they called a few days ago saying that they'll be ready for her soon. It's bittersweet because I know she'll learn and flourish there. She'll learn to speak and begin potty training...

So we commemorate our remaining time together with a photograph. She is teething so she constantly wants me to hold her, but I also suspect that she's insatiably curious about what's going on 3 feet above her eye level. She has her lovey, "blankie," that she likes to chew. The kitchen is constantly askew with random snacks and papers. Snacks.. you know, the organic stuff that she refuses to eat and the papers are remnants of ‪#‎momfail finger painting activities.

This stage, though, it's all temporary. One year from now, our lives won't look the same - and that's exciting and terrifying all at once.

The day that she can effectively unload the dishwasher and put things away will be nice, though. Now she just wields knives like a lightsaber.
